After a back-to-back win in route to a chance of making it to the 9th spot, the Philippine national women’s volleyball team lost to Australia in straight sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-23 at the 17th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championships on Thursday, September 19, at the MCC Hall, The Mall in Nakorn Ratchasima, Thailand.
The Power Pinays looked poised to continue their winning streak at the early part of the match; but after Australia took the first set, 25-22, the national team looked discouraged and started to lose their focus which resulted to several errors in their game. Australia took the second set easily, 25-15.
In the third set, the girls fought tooth and nail against their taller opponent, and was almost successful in extending the game to 4rth set when both teams tied at 22 all.
Backed up with more international experience, the Australians attacked and served an ace which brought them to match point.
Determined to win the third set, team captain Angge Tabaquero countered through an attack from the middle and scored for the Philippines, 23-24. But Australia proved too strong and ended the match via a crosscourt win.
With their loss, the Power Pinays, sponsored by PLDT Home Fibr, are now booted out of contention for the 9th to 10th place at this year’s championship. They will face Sri-Lanka tomorrow to fight for the 11th place.
Let’s hope and pray that they will end their stint at this year’s Asian Volleyball Championship on a high note.
