A day before coronation night, Philippines representative to Miss World 2013 pageant Megan Young suddenly finds herself in controversy over a series of “sexy photos.”

International Business Times UK writer Sanskrity Sinha in her online article titled “Miss World 2013 Controversies: Host City, Miss Philippines, Miss Uzbekistan and Bikini” wrote that the Pinoy bet “join(ed)” controversies after “topless photos of Megan Young” from the March 2012 issue of Rogue magazine “have surfaced and drawn ire from the fans.”

The journalist revealed that an anonymous user wrote to IBTimes UK questioning the rule on controversial photos.

“Rules are rules when it comes to the Miss World beauty contest it seems that contestants’ taking their clothes off is a clear breach of the laws,” the letter sender wrote, according to Sinha.

The letter sender continued, “A beauty queen is somebody that is a good role model inside and out and obviously is a beautiful person. It’s not just about exterior beauty; a beauty queen has to have outstanding morals, elegance, femininity and class. And that’s what everybody thinks it is. Beauty queens should be seen as role models not sex object.”

The user also asked, “Will an Indonesian group of religious and feminist launch a protest on Megan Young’s naked pictures? How will Miss World Organization and Indonesian government handle this issue?”

Sinha pointed out that Young “is one of the top contenders predicted to win the coveted Miss World crown,” after making it to the top ten of both the Beach Fashion and Top Model contests of the prestigious beauty pageant.

Previously, Miss Uzbekistan Rakhima Ganieva also found herself in hot water, after the country’s culture and sports ministry, and the Uzbekistan national committee on women labeled her an “imposter” who “never passed through any special selection process in Uzbekistan,” in an interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Sinha concluded that, nevertheless, “the Miss World Organisation is readying to host all the 130 contestants on the Miss World 2013 finale” and “Both Miss Philippines and Miss Uzbekistan remain listed on the pageant’s official website.”

Smear campaign

Miss World Philippines national director Cory Quirino believes that there is an “Anti-Miss World Philippines person or group” behind these issues.

“There has been a smear campaign by a negligible sector of the Philippine pageant industry to destroy Megan’s chances for a win in Miss World,” Quirino said in a text message to InterAksyon.

She related, “In Bali, the mood and aura around Megan is positive and promising. I believe (Miss World chair) Mrs. Julia Morley has explicitly answered this one relentless Anti-Miss World Philippines person or group to stop e-mailing the Miss World office as they are proud of all the candidates, including Megan.”

Quirino’s appeal: “My request to all our countrymen is to consider the honor the Miss World crown would bring to the country (if Megan Young wins). Let’s join hands now to prove that the Bayanihan spirit is strong, alive and above all, genuine.”
