Building up for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing China, Justin Chiongbian kicked off his strong build-up with a win at the Cold Storage Singapore International Triathlon yesterday.
The Cebuano triathlete ruled the boy’s 13-15 division (200-meter swim, 10K bike and 2K run), with a time of 25 minutes and 50 seconds, besting over 39 other Youth Olympic Games aspirants.
Chiongbian appeared to be headed for a seventh-place finish but recovered in the bike and run segments. He made his move in the bike segment where he ended up third behind rivals from the United States and Indonesia. Chiongbian then cranked it up halfway through the run leg and controlled the race, finishing the race a full minute ahead of his Indonesian pursuer who wound up second.
Vicky Deldeo was also triumphant in the girls side, where she grabbed the silver medal.
Chiongbian and Deldeo are poised to lead Philippines’ YOG triathlon aspirants when they fight for their YOG slots at the continental qualifying race on June next year in Kazakhstan.
“Based on their performance, Justin and Vicky deserve to be in the YOG. Their performance in Singapore is a good confidence-builder in time for the continental qualifier,” said Triathlon chief Tom Carrasco.
