Four Filipino boxers are seeing action at the 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan from October 14 to 26 this month.
Spearheading the PLDT-ABAB Team is Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga of Panabo, Davao del Norte who will see action at the 49 kg light-flyweight division.
Barriga is scheduled to meet 2011 SEA Games silver medalist Ngoc Huynh of Vietnam at today’s match.
Also included in the team are 2011 SEA Games gold medalist Dennis Galvan of Bago City seeing action at light welterweight division (64 kg), Roldan Boncales of General Santos City who will represent our country in the flyweight division (52 kg), and Mario Fernandez of Valencia,Bukidnon in 56 kg, bantamweight class.
“There are more boxers and countries here than in the Olympics. We face some tough fights but the boys have prepared well,” said ABAP executive director Ed Picson.
“There are no weight problems, they’re eating and training well and they’ve adjusted well to the weather, since we arrived 4 days before Opening day,” added Picson.
