Of the four Filipino boxers seeing action at the world championship, three advance to the next round of the 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championships at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Roldan Boncales got the Philippines’ campaign to a good start at the opening day of the championship last Monday with an upset win over Guatemalan Olympian Eddi Barillas in the flyweight division.
A substitute to injured Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar, 20 year old Boncales won in a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Olympian Mark Barriga on the other hand beat 2011 SEA Games silver medalist Ngoc Huynh of Vietnam in a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-26 and 30-27 last Wednesday; Men’s Light Fly 46-49kg division.
Just this afternoon, Bantamweight (56kg) Mario Fernandez defeated Guyana’s 2012 Olympic representative, Imran Khan, also in a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-26, and 30-27.
Dennis Galvan was not as lucky as the three other boxers. He bowed out to the 10th seed Gaybatulla Gadzhialiyev of Azerbaijan in the first round of light welterweight class. He lost in a unanimous decision, 27-30, 26-30, and 27-30.
Scheduled to see action on Friday is the 20 year old of General Santos City, Roldan Boncales, who will meet North Korea’s Ri Chung in the next round. Ri Chung of Korea recently won a gold medal in a tournament held in Russia.
Mark Barriga will face 5th seed Yosbany Veitia Soto of Cuba on Saturday; while Mario Fernandez will be facing a tough opponent on Sunday, Shiva Thapa, the 4th seed in the men’s bantam weight (56kg) division.
