After successfully defending their Peace Cup title last Tuesday, blessings continue to pour in for the Philippine Azkals as they now rank number 1 in Southeast Asia in the latest FIFA rankings released yesterday.
From No. 141 in the previous ranking, the men’s football team climbed four notches to No. 137, their best ever FIFA ranking in the history of Philippine football.
With the new ranking, Philippines claim the top spot in the SEA Ranking, overtaking SEA powerhouse Thailand, which dropped from No. 139 in previous ranking to No. 143.
“Another milestone as AZKALS achieves highest FIFA ranking so far, and currently #1 national team in SouthEast Asia! Thank you daddy God,” team manager Dan Palami tweeted.
Third in SEA is Myanmar which zoomed from No. 162 to No. 149 in the latest rankings; followed by Vietnam (No. 151), Singapore (No. 155), Malaysia (No. 160) and Indonesia (No. 162).
Philippine Azkals also now rank 20th in Asia, among 46 countries, topped by Japan, Iran and Uzbekistan, as the top 3 countries in Asia.
Spain remained on top of the FIFA rankings followed by Germany, Argentina, Colombia and Belgium.
Up next in Philippine Azkals calendar are the friendly games against United Arab Emirates (No. 71) on November 9, against India (No. 154) on November 15, and the AFC Challenge Cup in Maldives next year.
