Barriga and Boncales bow out of AIBA World Boxing Championship

Mark_Anthony_Barriga_World_Boxing_ChampionshipFight seed Yosbany Veitia Soto of Cuba proved too strong for Mark Barriga as he bowed out at the 2nd round of 2013 AIBA World Boxing Championship at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan yesterday.

Philippines strong contender for the Championship, Barriga, was beated by Soto in a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 to enter to the round of 32 in the men’s Light Fly 46-49kg division.

Roldan Boncales also suffered the same fate as Barriga in the flyweight division.

Boncales was defeated by North Korean Ri Chung also in a unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27.

Philippines’ only hope now in the week-long championship lies on Mario Fernandez who will be facing a tough opponent today, Shiva Thapa.

Thapa is the 4th seed in the men’s bantam weight (56kg) division.
