The SMART Taekwondo Poomsae national team made an impressive run at the recently concluded 8th World Poomsae Championships in Bali, Indonesia, by finishing third overall with three gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
World champion and SEA Games bound Mikaela Calamba again showed her winning form in the female individual freestyle poomsae event by defending her gold medal title this year.
Calamba of Cebu was then joined by Jocel Lyn Ninobla and Rinna Babanta to win another gold medal in the female under 17 years old team event.
The trio of Jean Pierre Sabido, Ernesto Guzman Jr. and Glenn Lava then delivered the country’s third gold in the +29 male team event.
“It was a good finish for our athletes, more particularly Mikeala (Calamba),” said Philippine Taekwondo Association’s Chief Executive Officer Sung Chon Hong of his wards.
Other winners are silver medalist Jean Pierre Sabido (men’s freestyle individual), and the trio of Marvin Vidal Gabriel, Raphael Enrico Mella and Dustin Mella (men’s under 29 team) who placed second to the Vietnamese trio of Dinh Toan Nguyen, Hieu Nghia Le and Anh Minh Le.
The freestyle team of Glenn Lava, Ernesto Guzman, Jean Pierre Sabido, Rani Ortega and Janice Lagman grabbed the bronze medal.
Calamba also captured a gold medal in the last world championships held in Tunja,Colombia.
