In a campaign that has been beset with winless matches after day two of the championship, the Blue Girls launched a great come back yesterday to win all their matches and clinch an opportunity to advance to the medal round at the 11th Asian Women’s Softball Championship in Kaoshiung, Taiwan.
Still pumped-up after three consecutive losses, the Blu Girls faced Hong Kong in their morning game in what they call a do or die match.
A loss against Hong Kong would mean kissing their chance goodbye of advancing to the medal round. A win against Hong Kong would mean they still have a chance to advance to the medal round.
The Philippine national women’s softball team delivered, and beat Hong Kong 3-1.
Their final hurdle to stamp their slot in the medal round is their afternoon match against Korea.
It was a nerve wrecking experience for the Blu Girls facing Korea in the afternoon match. But they stood their ground quite well amid great pressure and beat Korea in a close scoreline of 3-2.
Korea will still have to face China this morning for their final match in the preliminary round. Though China is poised to win against Korea, an upset will shatter Philippine’s team in advancing to the medal round since by then, Korea and Philippines will have equal wins (2) and losses (3), but the Koreans scored more than the Philippines.
If the Korean’s won’t upset China in the morning match today, the Blue Girls will be facing Chinese Taipei in the afternoon’s medal round competition. Chinese Taipei blanked Philippines in the opening match of the championship, 9-0.
Looser of the Philippines VS Chinese Taipei medal match will take the 4th place, while the winner will be playing against the looser of Japan VS China game for a place in the final championship game.
Final championship game is scheduled tomorrow afternoon at 13:00pm.
