The SEA Games Federation confirmed that Rugby 7s will be included as a men’s and women’s event in the SEA Games 2015 in Singapore, along with 29 other sports to be featured in the prestigious biennial game.
The Credit goes to Singapore Rugby union as they worked with the Singapore National Olympic Council and the Singapore SEA Games Steering Committee lobbied tirelessly to include Rugby Sevens for both men and women.
The 29 other sports besides rugby to be included are Aquatics (swimming, synchronized swimming, diving, water polo), Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Billiards & Snooker, Bowling, Canoeing, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Netball, Silat, Sailing, Sepak Takraw, Shooting, Softball, Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Dragon Boat, Triathlon, Wakeboard & Waterski, and Wushu.
President SRU and Newly elected VP ARFU lea Teo Ping added “We are pleased to inform you that rugby will return to the 2015 South East Asia Games in Singapore after a 8-year absence. The last time rugby was in the SEA Games was at the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand”.
He further added “This is a significant step in the right direction in the promotion and development of rugby in Asia and it is important that ARFU and the future hosting countries will collaborate towards rugby continue to remain as an event in the regional games.”
This will be the 6 time rugby is included in the SEA games. Rugby was previously played in 1969 Burma, 1977 Malaysia, 1979 Indonesia, 1995 Thailand and in 2007 Thailand.
The Dates of the games are 5 to 16 June 2015, with the following NOC taking Part in the Games : Brunei (BRU), Cambodia (CAM), Indonesia (INA), Laos (LAO), Malaysia (MAS), Philippines (PHI), Singapore (SIN) and Thailand (THA)
The following NOC who are not current ARFU members will also take part in the games Myanmar (MYA)* Timor-Leste (TLS)* and Vietnam (VIE)*
