Fil-Japanese judoka Kiyomi Watanabe earned a berth to the 2014 Youth Olympic Games after netting a bronze medal in the Asian Youth Judo Championships in Hainan, China last December.
Seventeen year old Watanabe who is entered in the -63kg women’s division won her repechage fight against India’s Mitlesh to land a podium finish that secured her spot at the 2014 YOG in China this August.
Watanabe defeated Xu Yanhui of China in the first round, but lost to Korea’s Han Hee Ju, in the second round. Hee Ju was able to advance to the semifinal round (and eventually won the said event), thus moving Watanabe down to repechage.
She became the latest Filipino bound for the YOG, joining qualified archers Luis Gabriel Moreno and Bianca Roxas-Chua Gotuaco.
Watanabe then later won a gold medal in the 27th Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar.
