Philippines faces Sri Lanka in Davis Cup 2014 first round tie


Philippines takes on Sri Lanka in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group II first round tie. This will be the eighth meeting between the two nations and Philippines have won all seven of their previous encounters. They most recently met in 2006 with Philippines winning 3-0.

Philippines lost an epic promotional play-off against New Zealand in 2013 coming back from 2-0 down to force a deciding fifth rubber which they lost in a deciding fifth set.

Ruben Gonzales won the fourth rubber 76(2) 46 16 75 86 to force the deciding rubber but Treat Huey could not defeat Michael Venus, ultimately losing 57 46 63 61 63.

Sri Lanka ensured they would remain in Zone Group II for 2014 with a 3-2 victory over Lebanon in their relegation play-off.

Bassam Beidas won two singles rubbers for Lebanon but Dineshkanthan Thangarajah won the deciding fifth rubber to keep Sri Lanka in the group.

Philippine Davis Cup team is composed of Treat Huey, Ruben Gonzales, Johnny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro.
