Philippines and Sri Lanka split Davis Cup opener

Filipino bets, Ruben Gonzales and Patrick John Tierro, opened Philippines campaign at the Asia / Oceania Group II of Davis Cup 2014 yesterday at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association Courts, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Fil-Am netter Ruben Gonzales defeated Thangarajah Dineshkanthan, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, as the Philippine Davis Cup team leveled their Asia Oceania Zone Group II tie at 1-1.

Gonzales’ win came after Patrick John Tierro bowed to Harshana Godamanna, 6-3, 6-7 (8), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in his first Davis Cup appearance since 2009.

Tierro’s return to the Davis Cup scene ended on a sour note as he struggled to keep his momentum after winning the second and third sets.

It was Tierro’s sixth singles loss against seven wins since joining the team in 2004.

Godamanna, Sri Lanka’s No. 1 nominated player, improved to 33-11 since anchoring the squad in 2002.

PH Davis Cup administrator Randy Villanueva said homecourt advantage played a big role in Godamanna’s win, adding there was a good crowd supporting the 28-year-old Sri Lankan top bet.

“The crowd got in, but PJ (Tierro) fought hard,” Villanueva said in a text message.

Although unranked internationally, Godamanna displayed his wide experience of playing and coaching a collegiate squad in the United States.

Match today will be the doubles game of Treat Huey and Johnny Arcilla, against Sri Lanka’s Harshana Godamanna and Rajeev Rajapakse.
