A total of 19 Filipino athletes will immediately be included in the Philippine delegation who will see action at the 17th Asian Games, coming from the Gilas Pilipinas and Philippine Volcanoes.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman and Asian Games Chef de Mission Richie Garcia said that they are expecting a big number of athletes in the Philippine delegation because of the team sports where they made sure that the Gilas Pilipinas and the Philippine Volcanoes’ Sevens will be part of the 2014 Asiad team.
Apart from Gilas and Volcanoes, they are also considering team sports like the men’s and women’s volleyball, softball and baseball to qualify in the games slated on September 14 to October 4.
Garcia explained that the men’s basketball and men’s rugby teams have already proven that they can compete and win in the Asian region which secured their spots in the delegation.
Gilas placed second in the 2013 FIBA-Asia Championship last year to secure a spot at the FIBA World Cup this year in Spain.
The Philippine Volcanoes have qualified to play in the World Cup Sevens last year, while the team has stamped their class and remained among the Elite 5 in Asia.
“Our team in rugby was ranked fourth or fifth in Asia. They also have players playing in Japan and you can see their improvement. I think we can gamble on them in the Asian Games plus we’re also thinking about the next Southeast Asian Games in Singapore, where rugby sevens will also be played,” explained Garcia.
