Filipino ice skater Michael Martinez qualified for the finals of the men’s figure skating event after he placed 19th in the short-program yesterday at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia.

The 17-year-old Martinez, the youngest among the 30 competitors in the men’s short program event, garnered a component score of 31.50 and technical score of 33.31 for a total of 64.81 points, enough at 19th place.

Martinez, a 17-year-old prodigy from Muntinlupa City, was hailed by the television commentators as “a really entertaining skater” prior to his routine. They also noted his pioneering status as the first Filipino to compete in the figure skating event in the Olympics. “History is being made,” according to the announcers.

Skating to “Romeo and Juliet” by Arthur Fiedler, Martinez calmly took the ice.

He pulled off a triple axle on his first attempt, before nailing a triple lutz without incident. He also showcased his flexibility with a camel spin.

“Such a great performance from such a young man,” noted the commentators.

“What a debut for the Philippines!” said one commentator.

“That was fantastic!” chimed another announcer. “Well done, you can be very proud of yourself.”

Only top 24 figure skaters advance to the long-program / free-skate / medal round event today.
