To advance to the Davis Cup Group I is the target of the Philippine netters as they moved to the second round of the Group II tie of the Asia Oceania zone this April.
“The Davis Cup team’s goal is to make it to Group I. The team has made a strong commitment to return to Group I. If we don’t, we consider it to be our biggest failure. We think our biggest chance is this year,” said Jean Henri Lhuillier, chairman of the Philippine Tennis Association (Philta).
Philippines has advanced to the Group I tie in 2010 after the Filipino netters beat New Zealand in the 2009 Asia Oceania Group II finals.
It has remained in Group I until 2012, but was again demoted to Group II in 2013 after team was beaten Chinese Taipei (3-2) in the 2012 Group I relegation playoff.
Playing in Group II this year, the Filipino netters Treat Huey, Ruben Gonzales, Jhonny Arcilla and Patrick John Tierro won the first round tie against Sri Lanka (3-1) early this month, and has advanced to the second round against Pakistan this April 4-6, 2014 in Pakistan.
