National weightlifting athlete Nestor Colonia and Olympian Hidilyn Diaz have officially made it to the Philippines’ line-up for the upcoming 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea slated in September 19 to October 4, 2014.
Colonia, who recently broke three weightlifting national records at the recently concluded Philippine National Games, equaled the Asian Games 2010 bronze medal lift of 271kg in the men’s 56kg category, to book his ticket to Incheon.
The twenty year-old weightlifter who was entered in the men’s 56kg category broke the 116kg national record in the snatch event with his new lift of 118kg. He then broke the 148kg clean and jerk national record, and replaced it with his new record lift of 153kg.
His 271kg total lift then replaced the previous record of 264kg.
The Zamboanga native placed 6th in the 2010 edition of the Asian Games, with Wu Jingbiao of China winning the gold (285kg), Cha Kum-chol of South Korea winning the silver (276kg), and Jadi Setiadi of Indonesia winning the bronze medal (271kg).
He was eighteen years old then, and lifted only 255kg (110kg + 145kg), enough to place 6th.
Olympian Hidilyn Diaz on the other hand initially failed to pass the criteria of the Asian Games Task Force amid improved performance in the Philippine National Games.
But Weightlifting Association of the Philippines (WAP) president Roger Dullano has filed an appeal for her inclusion to the team which was then approved by the task force.
“We appeal to the Asian Games Task Force to reconsider the performance of Hidilyn (Diaz),” said Dullano. “She failed to surpassed or even matched the bronze medal standard set by the Task Force because she had little time to prepare because she was on duty at the Philippine Air Force,” explained Dullano.
Dullano added that the Task Force has given Diaz time to recuperate and get ready for the Asian Games.
“Her performance in PNG was actually good. She has improved her lift but failed to achieve the bronze standard of the task force. So she was given time to prepare for her recovery in performance. Medyo nahirapan kasi siya mag-prepare dahil sa kanyang duty sa Air Force,” stressed Dullano.
WAP has recommended three weightlifters for the 17th Asian Games (Colonia, Diaz and Jeffrey Garcia), but only Colonia and Diaz managed to make it to the Philippine team.
Although Garcia has also performed well and showed improvement at this year’s Philippine National Games, his lift was way below the criteria of the task force for the men’s 69kg category.
The SEA Games 2013 silver medalist Garcia reportedly had muscle skeletal strain after after an accident last April 11 when the barbell accidentally fell on his shoulders while doing a snatch. The reason being why he has not improved his lift at this year’s PNG.
