After more than a year of being sidelined because of her pregnancy to her first child, Olympian Marestella Torres-Sunang made an epic comeback at the Hong Kong Inter-City Athletics Championship by winning the long jump gold medal yesterday.
The four time SEA Games gold medalist Torres-Sunang, leapt 6.26 meters en route to topping the long jump event of the prestigious HK athletics meet which was participated by top athletes from around Asia.
Torres-Sunang, who is now married to Philippines’ shot-put national record holder Eliezer Sunang, just started training a few months ago after giving birth to their son, Stohl, last January.
Her come-back is being mentored by expert Jim Lafferty, the CEO of British American Tobacco Philippines, where they not only set their goal on qualifying for the Asian Games 2014 this year, but on qualifying for the 31st Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro in 2016.
Although Torres-Sunang 6.25 meter gold medal leap yesterday is far from her best leap of 6.71 meters set last 2011 SEA Games, her come-back is really impressive considering that she has just started training a few months ago.
Her first international jump, after almost 2 years of not being in action, is pretty close to the 6.37 meters PH Team Asian Games 2014 qualifying jump.
She still has more than a month though to hit the Asian Games 2014 qualifying leap, and she hopes to beat the 6.37m distance when she sees action in Vietnam in 3 weeks time.
Meanwhile, compatriot Julian Reem Manabat Fuentes also won the bronze medal in the men’s junior long jump with his leap of 7.25 meters.
Fuentes is a Palarong Pambansa record holder and a member of the national juniors pool. He won the long jump silver medal in this year’s Philippine National Games.
Both athletes were being accompanied by coach Joseph Sy in this HK Meet.
