The Philippine men’s boxing team are now competing in Kazakhstan and China to prove their worth and win a slot at the Philippine team bound for Incheon Asian Games.
Seeing action at the Presidents Cup boxing tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan which started today are 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar, Dennis Galvan, Rogen Ladon and Charly Suarez.
On the other hand, London olympian Mark Anthony Barriga along with Ian Clark Bautista, Junel Cantancio, Mario Fernandez, Eumir Marcial Felix, Wilfredo Lopez, Josie Gabuco, and Nesty Petecio are seeing action in the China Open Boxing tournament on July 13 in Guiyang province.
Executive Director Ed Picson of Alliances of Boxing Associations of the Philippines (ABAP) said that the Filipino boxers’ participation in both tournaments would help them evaluate whom to send to the upcoming 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea on September 19 to October 4.
“This is very important part of the selection process for the Asian Games and the coaches will make their recommendations after this event,” Picson said.
He added that the boxers have to prove they are worthy and they deserve to compete in the Asian Games.
“We are also hoping to see big improvement in our boxers there,” stressed Picson.
Promising flyweight Saludar is optimistic that he would qualify to bag his second straight Asian Games gold for the country.
