The Philippine women’s softball team widely known as Blu Girls started their campaign at the World Cup of Softball IX with a win against Venezuela at the Bill Barber Park in Irvine, California, USA last Tuesday morning.

Fil-American Francesca Foti debuted in grand fashion, hurling a five-hitter as the Philippine Blu Girls blanked Venezuela, 3-0, to jumpstart their title campaign.

One of seven Fil-Ams in the squad, Foti allowed just one batter in scoring position as she retired 13 of the last 14 batters to power the Blu Girls to a rousing start in their first-ever World Cup stint.

The University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV) product got the needed run support even before she threw her first pitch as fellow Fil-Am Leia Ruiz scored on an RBI single by Garie Blando.

Ruiz hit a leadoff single, reached second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on an illegal pitch.

Cheska Altomonte of Ateneo made it 2-0 in the upper half of the second inning as she singled home Gabrielle Rodas, who earlier drew a walk.

Dani Gilmore, also a Fil-Am, settled the final count in the fifth on a two-out single that drove in Adamson’s Luzviminda Embudo from third.

On day 2 of the tournament, the Blu Girls crumbled, as the Canadian blanked the Filipinas softbelles, 7-0.
