Blu Girls campaign at World Cup of Softball
Yesterday was a sad day for Blu Girls campaign at the World Cup of Softball IX after absorbing a back-to-back losses at the Bill Barker Park in Irvine, California.
With 1 win and 1 loss record going to the third day of the tournament, the Philippine women’s softball team were all pumped up to bounce back amid tough opponents, Canada and USA.
First game was against the tournament leader, Canada, who battered Japan on day 1 with 11-4 scoreline, and again defeated Chinese Taipei on day 2 with 3-2 win.
The Canadians spent little time and immediately scored a home-run in the first inning. But the Filipina softbelles held their grounds, and maintained a 0-1 scoreline going to the third inning.
In the third inning, the Blu Girls crumbled a bit and allowed the Canadians to score and widen the lead with two to nothing.
Determined not to fall against the tournament leader, the Blue Girls scored a home-run in the 5 inning; but the Canadians were quick to answer back another home run in the 6th inning to widen the lead again by 2 runs.
The Blu Girls failed to score in the 7th inning, loosing their first game, 1-3.
Six hours later, they faced team USA who humbled the Filipina softbelles with a 13-1 rout that lasted just five innings.
Their back-to-back losses yesterday were their second and third consecutive defeats, after opening their campaign with a 3-0 shutout of Venezuela.
Team Philippines has now 1 win and 3 losses, and currently ranks 5th among 7 participating nations.
Canada continues to lead the scoreboard with 4 wins and zero loss, followed by USA (2-0), Japan (2-1) and Mexico (1-1).
Venezuela ranks 6th with a win and 4 losses, and then Chinese Taipei with zero win and two losses.
The national team, who is using the tournament to prepare for the Incheon Asian Games, will face Japan in todays game at 11:30am Manila time.
