Charly Suarez advance to semifinals
Filipino pugs Charly Suarez and Rey Saludar continued to show their great forms and advance to the semifinal round of the 4th President’s Cup at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Culture and Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Seeing action in his first international stint, Suarez beat local bet Jumsakbaeve last Wednesday night to book his semifinal berth, which earned him a thunderous applause even from the hometown crowd.
“I’m slowly getting into the groove after all those injuries that sidelined me last year. One and a half years away from the ring is too long. But I still need to get to 100%. I’m working on it”, said the two-time SEA Games gold medalist.
Saludar on the other hand stunned Cuba’s Jorge Luis Cordero Parlay by split decision last Thursday, and joined compatriot Suarez in the semis.
The reigning Asian Games champion, Saludar, stood his ground against the taller Cuban to earn the nod of two of the three judges, 28-27, 28-27, 27-28.
“He is a very strong puncher but I think I hurt him more,” said the Philippine Army enlisted man in Filipino.
The close victory earned Saludar a last-four encounter with Kazakhstan’s fancied flyweight A. Suleimenov today, while Suarez battles Mongolian Otdondalai for a spot in the finals.
The PLDT-ABAP participation here is part of the final selection process for the Asian Games line-up. Another batch of boxers leave on Sunday for the China Open in Guiyang, China.
