Azkals return as Southeast Asia’s top team in latest FIFA World Rankings

Philippine Azkals FIFA Ranking
The Philippines is back as the best team in Southeast Asia according to the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday.

The Azkals made a slight rise to 128th from 129th. They are now the highest-ranked nation in the region, followed by Vietnam (129th), Malaysia (151st), Indonesia (153rd), Singapore (154th), Thailand (157th) and Myanmar (160th).

This marked the second time that the Philippines became the best team in Southeast Asia in terms of rankings. The country last achieved the feat last October when it placed 137th in the ladder.

The Filipinos climbed in the rankings despite not playing any matches since May. FIFA calculates every country’s ranking based on match results (a win, a loss or a draw), its importance (i.e. a friendly or a World Cup match), and the strength of the nation’s opponent ranking-wise.

These points are then accumulated from the country’s past results in the previous four years, allowing some teams to move up or down in the rankings despite not playing any matches during a particular period.

Japan remained as Asia’s top team in the rankings followed by Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Jordan.

Recently-crowned World Cup champion Germany rose on top of the rankings, overtaking dethroned titlist Spain (8th). The Germans are followed by runner-up Argentina, third-placed Netherlands, Colombia and Belgium.
