As part of their preparation for the Asian Games, six SEA Games gold medalists and comebacking two-time Olympian Marestella Torres will compete in the Vietnam Open Athletics Championships set this week in Ho Chi Minh City.
Aside from Torres, the other athletes are Filipino-American Eric Shawn Cray, Henry Dagmil, Ramil Cid, Christian Bagsit, Christopher Ulboc, Edgardo Alejan, Julius Nierras, Isidro del Prado Jr., Mervin Guarte and Narcisa Atienza.
They will compete against crack athletes from 20 countries in Asia in the five-day competition.
This is the 18th time the Philippine competes in the annual competition organized by Vietnam Athletics Association and sanctioned by Asian Athletics Federation.
Torres, one-time Asia’s long jump queen and gold medalist in the 2011 SEA Games, skipped the Myanmar edition due to pregnancy. She placed fourth in the last Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.
Cray will compete in the 400m hurdles, the same event he ruled in Myanmar. The curly-haired sprinter is currently training in Texas where he is based.
Dagmil, a two-time Olympian like Torres, sees action in long jump; Cid competes in decathlon dominance and Bagsit tries his luck in the 400-meters and anchors the 4 x 400m relay team also made up of Isidro del Prado Jr., Edgardo Alejan, and Julius Nierras.
Cid, Alejan, and Atienza, silver medalists in Myanmar, take part in the 800m, 400m, and high jump, respectively.
The event is the second overseas of the athletes bankrolled by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
