Ian Clark Bautista bagged a gold medal in 2014 China Boxing Open
2013 Asian Confederation Youth Boxing champion Ian Clark Bautista bagged a gold medal in the 2014 China Open International Boxing Tournament held at the Guizhou Gymnasium in Guiyang Province last week.
Nineteen-year-old Bautista topped the men’s flyweight division, and became the only Filipino boxer to have won a medal in the prestigious boxing tournament.
Fellow Pinoy boxers – Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga, world champion Josie Gabuco, Nesthy Petecio, Junel Cantancio, Eumir Marcial, Mario Fernandez and Wilfredo Lopez failed to advance to the medal round.
The team’s one-medal output is quite short than last year’s one-gold, two-silver, one-bronze showing
Recently, the other members of the national team bagged two silver medals in the 4th President’s Cup held at the Baluan Sholak Palace of Culture and Sports in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The silvers came from reigning Asian Games champion Rey Saludar and Charly Suarez, who absorbed controversial losses in their respective final matches.
The two tournaments will serve as the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines’ (ABAP) basis to select its final lineup for the 2014 Asian Games scheduled on September 19 to October 4 in Incheon, South Korea.
The ABAP wants to surpass its one gold, one silver and one bronze performance in the 2010 edition of the Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China.
