Philippine tracksters bag 11 medals in Vietnam Open

Filipino-American Eric Shauwn Cray anchored the national track and field’s four-gold, four-silver, three-bronze showing in the 2014 International Track and Field Championships–Vietnam Open held in Ho Chi Minh City.

Cray, the reigning Southeast Asian Games champion, submitted 52.29 seconds to rule the men’s 400-meter hurdles while Junrey Bano completed the country’s 1-2 punch as he copped the silver medal in 52.61 seconds.

Former SEA Games titlist Rene Herrera and Myanmar Games champion Christopher Ulboc also dominated the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Herrera had 9:14.85 while Ulboc checked in at 9:20.42.

Riezel Buenaventura grabbed the third gold in the women’s pole vault (3.60m) while the quartet of Ulboc, Mervin Guarte, Wenlie Maulas and Paul Billones topped the men’s 4x800m (7:42.20).

Former Asian champion Marestella Torres, on the other hand, settled for silver in the women’s long jump with a 6.14-meter performance while Mervin Guarte, Wenlie Maulas, Paul Billones also wound up second in the women’s javelin throw (47.46m).

The bronze winners were Narcisa Atienza in women’s shotput (11.93m), Henry Dagmil in men’s long jump (7.56m) and Mark Harry Diones in men’s triple jump (15.49m).

National coaches Lerma Bulauitan-Gabito, Nixon Mas, Arnold Villarube, Luisito Artiaga and Emerson Obiena mentored the tracksters who are preparing for the 2014 Asian Games scheduled on September 19 to October 4 in Incheon, South Korea.
