Gilas Pilipinas member Japeth Aguilar will carry the Philippine flag in the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, the Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee confirmed yesterday.
PSC chairman Richie Garcia, also the chief of mission to the Incheon Asiad, said the 27-year-old Aguilar fits the stature of a flag-carrier because he stands 6-foot-9.
Aguilar is currently with the Philippine national team training in Miami, Florida, for the FIBA World Cup set Aug. 30 to Sept. 14 in Spain and the Asian Games in Incheon scheduled Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.
Aguilar, son of former national team player Peter, plays for Barangay Ginebra in the PBA. He had stints with Ateneo during his UAAP days and with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the US NCAA (Division 1).
POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco said he doesn’t have any problems with Aguilar’s selection as flag-carrier, a coveted assignment usually given to choice personages of a delegation.
