Tipped to win a medal, weightlifter Nestor Colonia failed to deliver Philippines’ first 17th Asian Games medal at the Moonlight Festival Garden in Incheon, Korea last Saturday.

Colonia, the only Filipino athlete seeing action in the medal round on day 1 of competition, was almost successful in his first attempt in the snatch event of the Men’s 56 kg final of the weightlifting competition, lifting an initial weight of 120kg.

He came back confident in his second and third attempts, but unfortunately failed in both attempts, abandoning hopes of giving the Philippines its first medal in the Games along with the chance to qualify for the Rio de Jainero Olympics in 2016.

Colonia is the only weightlifter seeing action in Incheon, Korea.

Yunchol Om of North Korea won the gold medal with a new Asian Game record lift of 298kg; and a World record Clean & Jerk lift of 170kg.

Vietnam’s Kim Tuan Thach took the silver with a total lift of 294kg, and a new Asian Games snatch record of 134kg.

Jingbiao Wu of China clinched the bronze after lifting 288kg.
