Mary Anjelay Pelaez contributed a medal to the Philippine campaign in the Asian Games when she won the bronze medal in the women’s -46kg taekwondo event Wednesday afternoon in Ganghwa Dolmens Gymnasium, Incheon, Korea.
Drawn with a bye in the round of 16, Pelaez defeated Myanmar’s Nway Nway in the quarterfinal round, to assure her of a bronze medal.
She then faced Korea’s Sohui Kim in the semifinal round, where she lost is a very close fight that ended 14-12 scoreline.
Korea’s Sohui went on to win the gold medal, as Pelaez settle for the bronze.
Pelaez is the third Filipino jin to bag bronze after Samuel Morrison in the men’s -74kg and and Ronna Ilao in the women’s -49kg on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Christian Al Dela Cruz looked poised to entering the semifinal round of the men’s -80kg event, as he led 5-4 in his quarterfinal match against Uzbekistan’s Maksim Rafalovich going to the third round.
But Rafalovich fought tooth and nails to steal the match that ended with 10-9 scoreline, in favor of the Uzbekistan jin.
On the other hand, YOG gold medalist, Pauline Louise Lopez, bowed down to China’s Yun Wang in the round of 16 in the women’s -57kg event.
In tomorrow’s action, Jane Rafaelle Narra needs only one win in the women’s -67kg to assure her of a bronze medal as she has drawn with a bye in the round of 16.
Benjamin Keith Sembrano on the other hand also gets a bye in the round of 32, and has to wait for the winner of GhM Hasan Abdullah of Kuwait and Tilak Bdr Gurung of Bhutan for his round of 16 opponent.
Sembrano has be given a go signal to compete, after he was rushed to the Jan Chok Medical Hostpial on an ambulance two days ago after he complained of sever chest pains.
