Boxer Charly Suarez settle for Asiad silver medal

Philippine boxing bet Charly Suarez picked up a silver medal after falling short against Mongolia’s Otgondalai Dorjnyambuu in the men’s lightweight (60 kg) final of the 2014 Asian Games boxing tournament in Incheon, Korea.

Suarez lost the gold-medal match in the first two rounds when he let the Mongolian fighter to pile up a lead that proved too big to overcome in a last-ditch attack by the Filipino at the Seonhak Gymnasium.

The only Philippine finalist in these Games won, 30-27, in the eyes of one judge but the two other judges gave the bout to Dornjnyambuu by similar 29-28 score.

The loss quashed the Philippines’ best hope of adding to the lone gold medal won by BMX rider Daniel Caluag and gave the well-funded boxing team a silver and three bronze medals from the quadrennial event.
