Philippines’ wushu sanda champions, Jessie Aligaga and Jean Claude Saclag left for Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday to compete at the 7th Wushu Sanda World Cup from November 19-21, 2014
Aligaga will defend his World Cup title in the Men’s 48kg event, while this is Saclag’s first time to represent Philippines in the wushu world cup.
Drawing of lots is scheduled today, while weighing and competition proper is on Friday.
Only athletes who placed among the top four of each weight category at the 12th World Wushu Championships last year were invited to join this event.
Aligaga won the silver of the men’s 48kg, while Saclag clinched the bronze medal of the men’s 60kg in last year’s world championship.
Last year’s men’s 52kg world champion, Benjie Rivera, and women’s 52kg bronze medalist, Evita Elise Zamora, were suppose to be part of the Philippine team in Indonesia, but both champions have already retired.
The Wushu Sanda World Cup is held every four years, and is dubbed as the “Olympic of Wushu”.
In the 6th edition of the world cup in 2012, Team Philippines won 2 gold medals courtesy of Jessie Aligaga (48kg) and Dembert Arcita (52kg) and a silver won by Benjie Rivera (52kg)
Let’s hope for the best that Team Philippines this year will duplicate our 2 gold medal win in the 6th edition.
