Muay specialist Phillip Delarmino ended Team Philippines’ campaign at the 4th Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand with a silver medal win at the Men’s Bantamweight (54kg) category.
The 24-year-old Filipino scored a walkover win after Ahmed Salam Murad of Iraq refused to face him in their semifinal meeting, to clinch him a shot for the gold.
Delarmino though bowed down to Thailand’s Parin Luangpon, 1-4, in the finals to settle for the silver medal.
Delarmino had earlier knocked out Sayed Aslamudin Amanullah of Afghanistan in the 54 kg quarterfinals with a roundhouse to the head in the second round of what was hailed as the most sensational fight of the meet.
Meanwhile, middleweight Joel Zaspa, flyweight Manuel Delos Reyes and lightweight Alvin Berto dropped their three-round semifinal matches on points and settled for bronze medals.
Delarmino was the last Filipino athlete in action at the 4th edition of the Asian Beach Games yesterday, as the biennial game comes to close today.
Team Philippines ended in 14th place in Medal tally, with 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 7 bronze; a much better haul compared to the 2010 haul of 2 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.
