Power-pouncher Nesthy Petecio registered the greatest upset of her boxing career as she defeated defending championship Tiara Brown of USA at the semifinal round of the Women’s Featherweight (57kg) event at the 2014 AIBA World Boxing Championships Saturday afternoon in Jeju Island, South Korea.

Going as an underdog in today’s semifinal match, Petecio relied on her power-punches to slow down the defending champion and over power her by taking rounds 1, 2 and 3 via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

Brown made a come back in the last round to salvage a win, but the Davao del Sur native was too much for Brown.

Judge Sergei Morozov of Russia still had Petecio as the winner in the fourth round (10-9), but judges from Bulgaria, Ivan Popov, and Ireland, Saddy Duffy, gave Brown the fourth round (9-10, 9-10); still not enough for Brown to take the match.

Petecio will go for the gold tomorrow against the Russian EUBC European Women’s Continental Champion, Zinaida Dobrynina, who just joined the Russian Boxing national squad this year but has already made waves in various international competitions.
