PH bounces back big; clobbers Singapore in AESAN University Games

The Philippine Women’s Volleyball team represented by Ateneo de Manila University stayed in contention for a bronze medal with a dominating straight set victory over Singapore, 25-12, 25-9, 25-11, Saturday in the 17th ASEAN University Games women’s volleyball tournament at the Palembang Sport and Convention Center in Indonesia.

Alyssa Valdez paced Ateneo with 11 points, eight from attacks and three service aces, as Bea de Leon also scored nine of her 10 from kills.

Ateneo started out strong, stringing seven straight points to turn a 5-5 deadlock to 12-5 lead in the first set. The Lady Eagles continued to pounce on the hapless Singapore squad, unloading another 5-0 run to take a decisive 19-9 lead and got six straight points en route to nabbing the 25-12 opener.

Feeling their groove, Ateneo once again got to a hot start in the second set, bursting for a 6-1 lead before slowly building a 20-8 advantage. Singapore struggled in that middle set as the Lady Eagles coasted to a 25-9 second set win.

It was a much closer affair in the third set before the Lady Eagles again pulled away by scoring six straight hits to push itself up, 14-7. Ateneo closed the game out by firing seven straight points and taking the 25-11 victory.
